Harbour Manager has compiled a directory
of the government agencies that are involved with the Sydney Harbour
Catchment (which includes the upper Parramatta River Catchment).
The directory provides you with contact details, their functions
and powers, some of the issues they are dealing with, and answers
to frequently asked questions.
Land Use
- Area = 110 km2
- 80,000 properties
- 72% residential (houses)
- 10% commercial (industrial, shopping)
- 12% infrastructure (roads, rail)
- 5% open space and bushland
- 1% zoned rural
Geology
- The Cumberland Plain spreads from the lower Blue Mountains to
Parramatta and as far south west as Campbelltown. It is a flat
basin-like feature which is largely composed of Wianamatta Group
Shales. Soils are deep clays of moderate to low fertility.
- The Hornsby Plateau occurs in the north-eastern area of the
catchment and is dominated by Hawkesbury Sandstone ridges and
valleys The soils are diverse.
Waterways
- The catchment includes the Upper tributaries of Sydney Harbour
Catchment.
- Major sub catchments: Toongabbie Creek is 70km2; Darling Mills
Creek catchment is 30km2; and Parramatta River floodplain is 10km2.·

- More than 80% of the creeks in the catchment remain in a natural
or semi natural state.
- Stormwater
Management Plan
- There are 29 sub-catchments
ranging in size from 62 hectares to 1279 hectares.

- 750 ha of native vegetation remaining
- Weeds such as privet and lantana are a major problem
- A range of animals including sugar gliders, ring tail and brush
tail possums, water dragons and over 60 species of birds are found
in the catchment
