22 February
Councillors David Bentham and John Dinnie of Baulkham Hills Shire
Council will inspect the Lower Darling Mills Creek Restoration project
at Speers Road, North Rocks on Saturday 19 February as part of a
tour to see the work being supported by the Upper Parramatta River
Catchment Trust. The two councillors are also members of the Trust's
board.
The work in Darling Mills Creek was undertaken last year by Council,
following requests from local residents. Residents were concerned
about weeds, willows and excessive sand in the creek channel that
was causing bank erosion on adjoining private properties. Working
to plans prepared by specialist consultants, Council's contractor
reshaped the banks, adjusted stormwater outlets, rock lined the
eroding banks, installed safety fences and planted many native species.
Council and the Trust shared the project's $400,000 cost.
"I am very pleased with the work carried out here by Council
and the Trust. This section of creek has needed attention for some
time, " said Councillor Bentham. "The project is a fine
example of what can be achieved when the Trust, Council and residents
work together to improve their local creek. I hope that we can restore
the health of other creeks elsewhere in the catchment," he
added.
Baulkham Hills resident, Eric Nowland, whose property backs onto
the creek, commented:
"In conjunction with the Loyalty Road Flood Retardation Basin,
this recent work has greatly reduced the flooding risk and improved
the flow in the creek. The rock wall and all the native plants will
prevent bank erosion and improve the area's appearance. ."
