Year 9 and 10 students from Catherine McAuley High School at Westmead
will help clean up the school's wetland and nearby Milson's Creek
on Friday, March 4 for Clean Up Australia Day.
Federal MP for Parramatta, Julie Owens, will take
part in the Clean Up activities and is excited by the work of the
students in improving water quality and the native vegetation in
the area.
"It's great that the students at Catherine McAuley
are so enthusiastic about their local environment. It is the small
groups like this that make the difference to our local environment.
I encourage everyone to become involved in their local group,"
she said.
Led by teacher, Shaun Nichols, students have made
a significant difference by creating a wetland alongside Milson's
Creek and restoring the creek. The students won a Regional Environment
Award from the Upper Parramatta River Catchment Trust in 2004 and
regularly participate in Waterwatch activities. The school used
the prize money from their Award to revegetate and mulch sections
of Milson's Creek.
Stephen Lees, the Executive Officer of the Upper Parramatta
River Catchment Trust, remarked:
"The Trust is pleased to be able to provide ongoing support
for schools like this through our Waterwatch and Green Schools programs."
