Years 7 to 10 students at Crestwood High School in Baulkham Hills
will take a break from the classroom to clean up Toongabbie Creek
and their local streets on Friday, March 4 for Clean Up Australia
Day.
Science teacher, Rita Kuksal, winner of the Educator Award at the
Upper Parramatta River Catchment Trust's Waterwatch Awards last
November, is coordinating the day.
Rita also coordinates the school's Waterwatch program, a bush tucker
garden and two environment days. Her environment group won a Senior
Waterwatch Award from the Trust last year for their enthusiastic
participation and contribution.
"As a member of the community you have to do your bit for
nature. I just make sure the kids are aware of the valuable work
we are doing and why the environment is important to us," Rita
explained.
Student Christopher Brown, who was involved in the environment
group last year, remarked:
"It is nice to know that we made the environment better for
people in the future to use."
Stephen Lees, the Executive Officer of the Upper Parramatta River
Catchment Trust, added:
"The Trust is pleased to be able to provide ongoing support
for schools like this through our Waterwatch and Greener Schools
program. We were particularly pleased that the good work of Rita
and her students was recognised at last year's Awards."
