Summary
It is estimated that 180 properties would be inundated
in a 100-year storm in the area near the confluence of Toongabbie,
Finlayson's and Coopers Creek at North Wentworthville. In 1997 the
Trust funded a comprehensive floodplain management study of this
flood liable area that resulted in a draft North Wentworthville
Floodplain Management Plan (NWFMP). Due to planning implications,
a supplementary North Wentworthville Floodplain Management Study
and Urban Design Study was completed in August 2001. After further
public exhibitions and meetings, the final plan was adopted in December
2001.
The adopted North Wentworthville Floodplain Management
Plan provides for a flood culvert beneath Briens Road, the voluntary
acquisition of three severely flood affected homes, several localised
flood investigations, development controls to reduce flood risks
as the area is redeveloped under a residential zoning, works to
address scour in Finlayson's Creek (by Sydney Water), improved emergency
planning, flood certificates and a public education program to raise
awareness of the flood risks.
